Is Scarlett Johansson’s The Outset Brand Clean & Conscious?

the outset
4 min reading time

Scarlett Johansson—one of the highest-paid actresses in the world— is the latest celebrity to enter the beauty industry with her own line of skincare products. As a celebrity brand, it’s quickly exploded in popularity.

So what’s so special about Scarlett Johansson’s clean skincare line?

The brand claims to be “consciously clean” – making this a large focus of the brand. Any time a brand claims to be clean, it’s important that we take a close look at its ingredients to ensure they’re not misleading customers.

At Better Goods, we dive deep into the ingredients, sustainability practices, and animal welfare practices of brands.

Currently, the brand has a total of five products, and as such, we’ll take a close look at each of them.

The Outset co-founders: Scarlett Johansson & Kate Foster

Our Methodology

At Better Goods, we rank brands on our three pillars: ingredients, sustainability, and animal welfare.

Brands are rated on the three pillars as follows.

Best  – This ranking is for the best of the best. Only exemplary brands will receive a ranking of best for any category.

Good – This ranking is for brands that are typically quite good, but don’t go above and beyond like our best choices.

Iffy – This ranking is for when we find something we find iffy. Not a good sign.

Bad – This ranking is reserved for the worst of the worst.

Ingredients (Rating: Best)

Because the brand has a small selection of products so far, we took a close look at the ingredients in all of them.

Every product in the lineup is fragrance-free, silicone-free, and vegan. They claim to use a combination of natural and safe synthetic ingredients, which is typical.

The Outset heavily leans on their claims of being a “consciously clean” brand, so we’ll hold them to a strict standard when looking at their ingredients.

Below is our findings after researching their product lineup.

All in all, we give The Outset a rating of best in terms of ingredients.

Sustainability (Rating: Best)

At the time of writing, the brand uses a combination of both plastic and glass packing for its products.

Of the five products available, four are packaged in recyclable glass, and their Gentle Micellar Antioxidant Cleanser is made with 50% post-consumer recycled plastic. The brand claims that the plastic caps are recyclable, but in reality this is probably not going to happen.

The products come in cartons made from recyclable FSC-certified paper, and the same can be said for their shipper packaging. All paper packaging is made in a 100% wind-powered and carbon-neutral facility.

Furthermore, the brand is soon coming out with low-waste refill pouches so that customers can buy the product once, and refill the packaging over and over.

All in all, the brand is trying to do sustainability right from the outset, and this is a commendable effort.

Animal Welfare (Rating: Best)

Cruelty-Free

The brand is cruelty-free, meaning that neither their ingredients nor finished products have been tested on animals.

For this reason, we give The Outset a rating of Best for their cruelty-free status.

Vegan

The brand is also fully vegan, meaning that all of its products are free from animal-derived ingredients.

For this reason, we give The Outset a rating of Best for their vegan status.
